Pooled quota Train ticket

close up
Last week i had been to madurai to attend my collegue's wedding. I returned on 12/02, sunday. I have booked the 3-tier train ticket in kanyakumari express. I have booked it on 31/01. When i booked the ticket status was "PQ WL 1" (Pooled quota Wait list 1). I was sure that it would be confirmed. But, the status never changed even at the time i boarded the train. The preference is given to point-to-point passengers (kanyakumari - chennai). Thus the status of all other wait listed tickets never changed. Finally, i happen to travel in sleeper class coach without a seat.

Many budding politicians (40-50yrs of age) were travelling in the train. They were traveling to chennai to check the status of the file they nominated in their party to contest in assembly elections. The travel was fun watching them discussing the consequences of contesting in various places.

Note: If you booked a ticket with status "PQWL", the chances are very low to get confirmed. My advice for you is to look for alternate mode of transport. Alternatively, you can book a ticket from point-to-point, in the above case Kanyakumar to chennai. Sure, it will be wait listed. There may be chance it may be converted to RAC, but PQWL tickets *mostly* never change.

PQWL 1
Hi i have booked the ticket on 31-08-2006 for Chennai exp to tarvel back on 29-10-2006, with PQWL 1 status.
I was also under same impression that it would be confirmed. But today 19-10-2006 also it is the same. Thanks for your comment. I will cancel this ticket. But i have also booked 2nd sleeper ticket. I will retain that.

Re: Pooled quota Train ticket
I am a frequent traveller in Indian Railways.
I thought my experiance of it might help.

In my experiance the system is very good and perfect for Indian scenario.
I have seen confirmed PQWLs...there is no rule that it won't be.
For AC tickets always remember that people do not cancle AC tickets as frequently as SL. So W/L 100 in SL is as good as W/L 1 in 2-tier AC.

And again wether the ticket will be confirmed or not very much depends on season and perticular route too.

Re: Pooled quota Train ticket
The only thing I know is: I have PQWL 22 at 1:00 PM but when the chart was prepared it was confirmed to S4 31. So, basically there is no logic that PQWL will not be confirmed or has low chances of getting confirmed.

Re: Pooled quota Train ticket
U have the option of the tatkal scheme if the train u propose to travel has that. otherwise try the ticket from point to point the chances of getting the ticket confirmed is more

PQWL clarification
I went through this article posted by Mr.Bhuvan.I was also waiting holding a PQWL ticket. Now I understand that only after clearing all other types of WL ticket,PQWL will be considered. It seems it is risky to wait for confirmation with this.Is this correct?

Re: PQWL clarification
Yeah, that's my opinion. It will become only after other WL tickets are moved to RAC. It depends on the season and the train you have booked. If it is a festival season, I'd recommend to plan your trip by other means. If you booked ticket to a southern part of TN, the same rule applies!

Re: PQWL clarification
I've PQWL 2 ticket. It didnt show it is pooled queue when i booked. It is mentioned in the ticket once it is printed.

I've to travel today. dont know whether it'll confirm or not.

I got this info from IRCTC page.
A Pooled Quota Waiting List ('PQWL') is shared by several small stations in a particular region. E.g., Tiruppur, Salem, etc., share in the quota and wait list for some trains originating from Trivandrum or Mangalore. As another example, the 2723 Andhra Pradesh Exp. has three quotas, for Secunderabad - New Delhi, Secunderabad - nagpur, and Secunderabad - Bhopal. There is also a pooled quota for passengers travelling from Secunderabad to stations beyond Bhopal but short of Jhansi; if this quota is exhausted, a passenger is placed in the pooled quota waiting list. Such remote location quotas are also provided when there is a very strong demand for the train in question, because of which, without such additional quotas, all seats or berths might be fully consumed by passengers from the originating station leaving nothing available for those wishing to travel from intermediate points.

PQWL
ALWAYS BETTER TO CANCEL THE TICKET IF U GOT THAT ONE IN POOLED QUATA LIST.

STATUS NEVER CHANGES. POSSIBILITY TO GET CONFIRM IS VERY LESS.

Re: PQWL
Hey, I have a general query. Recently IRCTC availed a facilty to book W/L e-tickets. Also the rule says that, you don't have to go and manually cancel the ticket. Railways will take care of cancelling the same and refunding the money. Will railways refund the full money? Any idea??

Re: PQWL
THE TICKET WOULD BE CANCELLED AUTOMATICALLY IF IT REMAINS WAITING EVEN AFTER THE CHART PREPARATION & MONEY WOULD BE REFUNDED BACK IN THE ACCOUNT.Rs 20 would be deducted from the basic fare only if you hold a II SL class ticket.

I think confirmation in the case of 2AC and 3AC is difficult but for sleeper class, I don't think the same.

PQWL
Thanks for all the info. I had a funny experience. I have planned to travel from Vadakara to Ernakulam on 25th dec 08 by Maveli exp (6603). The train is from Mangalore to Trivandrum. I had booked e ticket from Vadakara to Ernakulam on 3.12.08 and found PQWL1 on the ticket. to check out what PQWL is i searched google and got this info . Now i again retried to book ticket today itself from the nearest Main station (Calicut)There are 102 seats available and i have booked one ticket also. thanks to this info. So my advice to all is that if you find the status as WL or PQWL, you try from nearest main station and in all possibility you can get reservation. If you are booking from some small station you might always get a PQWL.

Forget all the thing yaar. the best thing is TATKAL quota. why to take chance with PQWL; better to gamble it on TATKAL....

Pooled quota Train ticket
Here i am sharing my experience...

I've mailed to IRCTC for PQWL waitlist details and I'm pasting overhere actual response... also, my ticket get confirmed today from PQWL 10... :)

Dear Customer,

Kindly inform you that your ticket under pnr no 8133457597 is wait list ticket under pool quota. There are certain long distance trains, which have end-to-end quota. A maximum quota is allotted to the train starting station and booking is permitted from source station to the destination station. The passenger can book from starting station to destination station out of this quota. At this location a small quota is allotted for the booking of passengers from a roadside station to the other roadside station, which is called PQ (Pooled Quota). When this quota is full, PQWL starts.

your reservation request is processed by the centralised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) of Railways and allotment of accommodation is done by the System without any manual intervention and confirmation your ticket depends upon the cancellation and on existing railway rules. You will get the final status of your ticket after preparation of chart.

Thanks & Regards

I think PQWL is a small quota for remote or roadside stations for long journey. PQWL will have improve in status if other PQWL holders in front of you cancels. Say yours is PQWL 3, and other passenger holds a ticket for PQWL 1, 2 then if he cancels his ticket then your PQWL status is upgraded to PQWL 1. And if their are any cancellations of other passengers in PQ quota. Then you fall under PQ (pooled Quota) from PQWL. Hence under PQ you will get your ticket confirmed. PQWL status change is not as rapid as GNWL (General Wait List) because only small quota is given for PQ and hence only less amount of passengers book that ticket and hence their are also less chances for these passengers to cancel their ticket unlike GNWL passengers. Hence PQWL status change is l.ess frequent. It is not that after GNWL completes then PQWL are considered for up-gradation. Both are distinct quotas.

It will never change because of the foolish presentation by the I.R.Better you get it refunded and search for alternate mode of travel. Not even GOD can help you in view of ambiguous notation i.e.pooled quota W>L>
